It is always a thrill to do a spring hike up The Tuckermans Ravine trail to the Hermit Shelter and watch the skiers glide down the head wall of one of the most revered mountains in the Northeast, Mt. Washington.

Not an easy feat when you have to uphill hike 3000' with skis on just to get to the base and then climb some more.
But plenty of youngsters do it for the thrill and experience and return yearly to the area to feel the excitement and joy of such an accomplishment.
But for us more senior types it's just getting to the hut after the 2.4 mi. trek and witnessing this amazing impressive scene and long standing tradition for so many.
It was a blue bird day last Wednesday with great temps. little wind and a nicely packed down trail.... perfect for a hike up and best of all we could still do it!

Parked here to hike to Crystal Cascade. The hike today was super icy the closer you got to the falls but still easy enough with my hiking stick and proper footwear. Was greeted by a half dozen red squirrels digging around for food around the visitor center. Good times!

I got here early to hike Mt. W. They have a ton of parking, but it nearly fills up by 7am on weekends. The visitor center offers a lot of info about the trails, has food for sale, and has a bathroom downstairs. The trails up the mountain are strenuous, so come prepared.

Here is Crystal Cascades along Tuckerman Ravine (along with a nice view from the trail). It’s a beautiful waterfall and very easy to get to! It’s just under a mile round trip to get to. The views are spectacular especially given how short of a hike it is. With that said, there will likely be other people with you soaking in the view. If you visit in winter, I’d recommend wearing spikes as it’s a little icy near the viewing area. Highly recommend if you are in the area 😊

Full service visitor center, great place to park and hike. There is a shop, a restaurant and renting facilites in the buildings compound. Easy parking and very well kept. This is a hub for trails and other outdoor sports in the White Mountain National Forest. Beautiful surroundings.

Loved this place. The store had better deals on several items than REI and other retailers. Organized area, decent parking, and the hiking trails to Mount Washingtion using the Tuckerman Ravine Trailhead to the Lions Head trail which starts right through and then behind the buildings.

Great facility, the interpretive short nature walk is fun and informative too for those who aren't hiking a long and hard trail to the summits.

This is not a tennis shoe and jacket kind of hike. It blurs the line between a typical hike and mountain climbing. The mountain makes its own weather and there can be temperature drops of 30-40 degrees from base to summit depending on the day. Wind speed can also be extreme at the top. To put it in perspective, Mt. Everest climbers use this peak during the winter to train as the harsh conditions can be similar, minus the lack of oxygen and glacier gaps.

That said, if you are up for the hike, it’s worth it. Be prepared to hike a trail that is mainly rocks and boulders most of the way and then very steep slopes higher up depending on which trail you take. Absolutely worth it, even if you can only make it partway up.

The gift shop is also excellent.
