We love the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention & Visitors Bureau! We wish we could give six stars. One suggestion: Martinsburg and Berkeley County are located in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The "lower Shenandoah Valley" is a much more recognizable geographical description than the "Eastern Panhandle" (a political boundary). The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester has many outstanding exhibits and displays on and from Berkeley County. We should leverage the name recognition of the Shenandoah Valley. Keep up the great work!

The structure itself is an attractive, quaint historic home built in the 1850s. The gentleman who greeted me was welcoming and helpful, politely leaving me to wander around after we spoke. I can't comment on the "convention center", as my visit was related to a possible move to the city and I wanted to gather maps and general info about Martinsburg. As much as I enjoy the internet, hard copies of this kind of information are often invaluable resources to me, and the museum/visitor center had plenty of this available. I got two large fold out maps - one a highway map of WV, the other a street and county map for Martinsburg and Charles Town. There were high-quality, entertaining booklets featuring the states wineries, distilleries, and craft breweries. I walked through the musuem's first floor and found the paintings and furniture fairly interesting. The second floor, which I did not have time to visit, promised to be entertaining as it apparently chronicles Martinsburg's experiences during Prohibition. There is a collage on the stairwell wall with about a dozen intriguing headlines from the local paper during this time. The historic marker on the sidewalk in front of the building explains that this was the home of Belle Boyd, a Confederate supporter who did some spying for them, and who after the war became an actress and often performed in shows portraying her spy activities.
