Some people miss the beauty that is right in front of them, such as those that have given harsh reviews. I was there for an event and our meal was catered so I can't speak to the food that is there., but the snack bar serves delicious mock lime rickies and ice cream. |There are many volunteers that work there, and are there because they love it. I met several people (visitors as well), that have been coming for years, and some expressed what a magical experience it is for them. If you love a turn-of-the-century, historic vibe and don't mind the rusticness of it, then this is the place for you.|You can enjoy serenity in the rocky island, natural beauty, with views of the ocean all around, as you meander pathways or enjoy one of many rocking chairs on the wraparound porch.|Go with an open mind and an open heart, and prepare to be enchanted.

Spiritual retreat in monastic accommodations and simple communal meals. The hotel is run by a nonprofit organization with the Unitarian Universalist Society and United Church of Christ. This is not a place for people who are looking for five star hotel or even a Hilton. Be welcome to enjoy this magical place and enjoy the salt air. You are on a rock in the middle of the ocean. There is barely water, let alone a three course steak dinner. Enjoy it for what it is, which is enchanting.

The Oceanic Hotel is a time capsule. The historic property provides rare glimpse into and experience of staying in a turn-of-the-twentieth-century inn. The minimally updated building retains much of its original character and furnishings.||The island setting is spectacular. There are numerous opportunities to take in expansive views of the ocean from the island, its network of walking trails, and the hotel’s large, covered front porch and rocking chairs. ||Star Island is clearly a special place for people who’ve been going there for years. There are charming traditions like the communal meals, evening candlelit service in the stone chapel, and refreshing lime rickeys available in the café. Most of the guests staying at the property while I was there were return visitors (many had been coming for decades) and knew others. While people were friendly, I couldn’t help but feel a bit out of place, as if I had crashed a private party or summer camp. The person at the check-in desk provided minimal orientation to the property and its customs.||The guest room was disappointing. It had a single bare bulb light with a pull chain overhead, mattresses on rough wood platforms, wooden window shutters that came apart, and a bare wood floor with remnants of floor adhesive.||I am a fan of historic properties and simple lodgings. I have stayed in many across the US that offer spare rooms with bathrooms down the hall and cafeteria-style meals. The Oceanic was more expensive in comparison and did not match the quality. More attention to the quality of service and accommodations is required to be competitive and attract guests outside the typical customer base.|

Spoke at a conference on Star Island. As other reviewers have noted, the historic hotel is 7 miles off the NH coast with magnificent views from rooms and porches. Facilities are accurately described on the website - simple accommodations with shared baths. Internet limited to main building. ||Unlike several 2022 reviewers, I found the food to be decent. Conferees told me that a new chef had vastly improved the meals. Sensible menu with emphasis on American classics suited to cafeteria service. Was surprised to also find medium rare roast beef, good salads. Excellent baked goods. Plenty of vegan and gluten free options. ||Contrary to some 2022 reviewers, I found the service by the young staff was cheerful and efficient.||Bottom line: the hotel could be used as a set for a fin de siecle movie. Beautiful setting and historic ambience. Simple rooms and amenities as described on website. I enjoyed my week on the island.

Came out to spend the day hoping for a peaceful and scenic retreat. Yikes, this place was a disaster. Won’t be returning unless they get new management. So crowded it was impossible to find a quiet spot to sit. The hotel “restaurant” offers one meal for lunch, which was grilled cheese. Facilities were disgusting and unclean. The entire island reeked of trash. The huge front porch of the hotel reeked of trash, the walks reeked of trash, and we could still smell trash even after climbing as far out on the rocks by the water as we could. The historic buildings were all occupied by people playing loud music and shrieking children. It is such a shame that such a beautiful and historic location has fallen apart like this, we won’t be returning.

I've been going to Star Island since the 80s. I grew up going there, worked there as a summer job in my 20s and returned as a guest. WOW has the quality of service fallen off a cliff!||Staff used to be super friendly and felt like family. I guess due to budget cutbacks, they're paying for the cheapest people possible who don't care about the island and community.||FOOD IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Bring your own. And remember there is nothing to eat at all at night (and dinner is at 6:30). I can't stress enough how bad the food is. They literally can't cook rice - it was crunchy! I thought we were safe on sandwhich day but the cold cuts were gross and bread stale. Everything used to have a homemade feel - now everything looks and tastes like prison food. Nothing fresh in sight. Fruit not ripe, veggies with no flavor. Meat is terrible quality and almost definitely from a factory farm.||I was so disappointed with how far the standards have dropped. ||And it's not even cheap!

Would not recommend staying here if you’re not a part of a conference. Extremely loud with people yelling and running around everywhere. Writing this at 3am, as they just set off the fire alarm no doubt for one of their conference drills. Will be getting no sleep before traveling home. They said the stay had no frills, but I didn’t realize they meant unsanitary. Could not sleep in the double bed we paid for as it smelled like literal butt. The meals provided in the cost of the stay are essentially lunch meats. Don’t waste your money. Can’t wait to get off this island.
Update: They started blasting music in our hall before 8am to clean rooms. Our checkout isn’t until 10am. Guess we don’t count as guests.
There was nothing I could eat at breakfast, so I figured I’d wait until the snack bar opened…which is listed to open at 9am.
Was told on Sunday’s it doesn’t open until closer to 11. Guess I won’t have breakfast
Stuck here until our boat at one.
Were hoping to go out on the kayaks, but were told no one is available to be a lifeguard today. So we’re stuck here with nothing to do and nothing we paid for.

I just wanted to second David W's review. The place is gorgeous but the food was unacceptable. Several meals were inedible. The food was often cold. If you are a vegetarian you are out of luck. I often asked workers what was in the "gluten free" area and they couldn't tell me. I even wrote to them when I returned but never heard back. And you are stuck unless you want something from the snack shop. I see that they have a new chef this year so I may give it another try, but I WILL bring food with me.

Go up
