Simply stunning! It is a little hike, and if you are with a slow group it's less places to see. Overall experience there was fantastic. Guide was knowledgeable and the views were otherworldly!

Google maps is wrong here. You cannot drive out here. You must take a guided tour (they seem to have great reviews).

Privatized public road..

Drove my disabled partner 3hrs to see view of bottom of the only road accessible glacier in the syate. Turned away by grumpy, rude locals bitching about it being private land since 2020.
Too bad, most should avoid supporting people/tpur companies who don't share and cherish natural access for everyone. Especially as an Alaskan, this is extra distasteful.

You can NOT visit the glacier for free/on your own unfortunately. You have to pay for a tour guide. It’s a beautiful thing to visit, but the guide can be pricey.

While it is simply amazing being so close to a glacier, I had to say that people are damaging it In a unnecessary way. Since the location is not protected by park services, people do whatever they want: like kicking or damaging the ice. I don't think this is a great idea give. The glacier is melting fast in the past decades.
If you do come, please be respectful and be careful.

Info as of 24 May '22, before you go: is NOT a public parking lot accessible free of charge!!!

The glacier can be spectated from a few lookout points on Glenn Highway and looks really beautiful, yes.
But for everyone taking the drive (last bit by a bad, non-maintained gravel road - you should only do with a 4x4!) and expecting that you have the choice between a) taking a payed guided tour or b) just parking here for free and walk towards a natural monument... you can't!
It's not like in states like Cali or Nevada, where you pay an entrance fee to a National Park (or one week access to all in the area) and just go, no, you can't.
The glacier access is cut off by private land and the only way to get to the glacier is a guided tour which costs from $125 per Person (by Glacier Tours).
IMHO this is the wrong approach. Natural monuments should be protected and given access to by public organizations (park rangers) for fees that everyone can afford. But if you wanna go with your two kids and then pay $50 for gas and $500 for 4 people. It just seems wrong, since nature belongs to everyone and should be protected from e.g. littering for fees, that are reasonable.
Bottom line, we are visiting from abroad and the drive was nice, but we've been disappointed.
