I don’t understand the expectation of those that give this place a low rating. It is on the rim of the Grand Canyon! This is not a luxury resort. If that’s what you want, visit the canyon from Las Vegas. However, if you are looking for a clean, quiet night of rest, in a prime location- this is the place. The building is more of a dormitory than a hotel. There is a common area, but no concierge or restaurant. We selected a room with a “partial view” that had a full, beautiful view over the canyon. I debated between resorts and while I did not stay at the other locations, these are my thoughts to help others. Maswik is set back and very bare bones, but could be very convenient for large families because of the lower cost and food court. At the opposite end of the scale is El Tovar with its stately presence and more expensive food options. It is cozy, but the rooms lack canyon views and it is a hike to get to the shuttles/trails. Bright Angel is another lovely historic lodge, but the cabins lacked privacy and views in my opinion. Thunderbird is a twin to Kachina, but is at a slightly lower elevation and set back further from the canyon edge. I imagine that would equate to less spectacular views. I could not have been happier with our Kachina room (I think it was 6341).

The location is the real attraction here.

The room itself is clean and comfortable. A double queen room for a family of four, very standard hotel accommodations, no frills.

We had a very nice two night stay in a canyon view room. The second floor has better canyon views. Room 6337 is right in the middle on the second floor with an amazing view of the canyon.

There is no daily room cleaning.

There is a fun game room on the first floor. If you don't pay for the canyon view room, you can get a similar view from the game room.

It is nicely situated between Bright Angel Lodge and El Tovar.

Check-in was easy, and the employees were friendly.

Parking is terrible; I lucked out with a spot at El Tovar. It would be a good improvement to have reserved parking for hotel guests, but it seems logistically improbable to enforce it.

Highly recommend Kachina Lodge!

Can't beat the Grand Canyon views from some rooms and location from all. That is best part of this. They do have lounge good for playing games or reading if you want out of the room. The rooms were basic and fine. There are stairs everywhere. Would not be worth the cost except for location so that's what you are paying for. Can't beat getting to see sunset and sunrise at Canyon. Staff and service top-notch and El Tovar dining was premium service and options. I think I reserved a room for El Tovar and wanted their porch etc and they put me in Kachina which feels like overflow. That's maybe disappointing but it ended up being a fine place and right next door.

Kachina Lodge is located on the South Rim so it has easy access to the Rim Walk. I would definitely stay there again for the convenience. You can pick up the free shuttle and move around the park easily. I also enjoyed the convenience of dining at the El Tovar hotel which is next door. My family thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We were able to have connecting rooms which made it very nice.

You are paying for location and maybe a view. That is it. The rooms are small for a family of 4 with luggage. It’s very hard to move around making you want to spend as much time outside as possible. The rooms have not been updated in many years. That includes the carpet and other furnishings.

It was not hot while we were there (high in the low 70s) and the cooling system could not keep up. I heard some say it was not true A/C.

Parking is very limited. You must check-in at El Tovar. It is unlikely you will find a staff nearby if you have a need.

Food in the village is hit or miss. Definitely lower your expectations for your room and food. Focus on the scenery for enjoyment.

Stayed here 3 days with family on vacation. Wonderful location, but you are paying for that. Food options nearby but just remind yourself this is not a Foodie destination. Downsides were not getting the adjoining rooms we requested and very thin toilet paper (but rooms were placed close together, and I’m sure the TP helps with sustainability). Overall you’re paying for convenience of location which worked out well for us with a 4 year old and my 78 year old dad. It was nice to not have to drive in/out of the park.

The rooms are not luxurious and a bit dated (in a fun, retro kind of way), and I’d expect more for the price elsewhere in the country, but you absolutely cannot beat waking up on the rim of the Grand Canyon, having access to the other historic hotels and restaurants on the south rim, and the service to rival any top hotel. I had lots of interactions with staff as I booked and then changed reservations by phone several times, at check in (where the man at the desk gave us great and detailed advice on visiting sunset), in the El Tovar gift shop (where the clerk warned me against hiking in the next day’s predicted thunderstorm weather and indeed there was thundersnow the next day and I was VERY glad not to be exposed to lightning on the trails), at the AZ Steakhouse and El Tovar dining room (where servers were super friendly, efficient and accommodating of a food allergy and the food was surprisingly great) and with lost and found after our stay (who promptly recovered and mailed a camera charger to me with an absolute minimum of hassle). I am a Hyatt Globalist and the service I got from all Xanterra staff was every bit as thorough, friendly and helpful as any of the excellent service I’ve gotten at high end Hyatt resorts around the world. I was extremely impressed and would not hesitate to stay at their park hotels again.

We stayed at the Kachina Lodge, and the view from our room was spectacular! We could see the Grand Canyon right from our window. The lodge is situated right along the rim and walking distance to walking trails. We were blessed to be there during a snow storm, which made the area all the more beautiful! We could walk right next door to eat. Definitely worth a little extra money to stay right in the park.
