An absolute delight.
A lovely experience in a great location. I specifically choose my room for the bathtub and bath did not disappoint. I really enjoyed all of the special touches (sparkling water on tap, keyless, fridge) as well as sharing the story of the C. Thaxter with a book in everyroom. I loved thumbing through Thaxter’s book and art as a fellow gardener. Appreciated being in a artistic & mid-century b&b. Fun, comfy & creative!

Thank you to the staff for making me feel pampered and special.

Stayed here during a business trip and had a wonderful stay. Starting from pre-arrival, the hotel called me since I left a note regarding late check in (after midnight) to ensure I understood directions to check in. Check in was extremely easy. Loved not having a room key and being able to use a code. Hotel is impeccably kept.

The hotel bed was very comfortable and one of the best I've ever slept on. Bathroom was great with an excellent large shower and great shampoo/conditioner (so no need to bring your own). Best was the heated bathroom floors! Appreciate the little details like having free womens feminine products available.

I was pleasantly surprised to see there was an elevator to the second floor (most inns in Portsmouth are stairs only). Great, quiet location and I never heard any neighbors. Nespresso machine (happy to see since I only drink espresso) in lobby along with snacks, and free water. I travel to Portsmouth quite a bit for work and would rate this hotel in top 3 of places to stay here. I used to stay at chains for work but only stay at inns now in Portsmouth and never regret it. Highly recommend a stay here.

Absolutely beautiful old fashioned hotel. Lovely room with all the amenities. Comfortable lobby with drinks and snacks. Excellent location for walking all around historic Portsmouth! My only problem was I have a sesativity to perfumes/fabric softness and the sheets and rugs smelled very floral. But, I would definitely stay there again!

On a whim stayed at the Thaxter for an overnight stay in Portsmouth before flying out of Boston in the morning. Visited with my mother. We booked direct over the website very smoothly and received our entry codes as we would be arriving after front desk was closed. The beds and pillows were so soft, everything was clean and updated, and the bathroom floor was heated. The rooms are a *little* small if you are expecting a regular hotel stay, but if you are accustomed to boutiques the room size was just right for 1 -2 people (standard Queen, single bed). They have free snacks, local tea, and a Nespresso machine in the lobby 24/7 which was great for us because we had to leave very early in the morning. They also have free stashes of most any products you may have left at home - if you love the products in the room there's even an option to purchase those (I know that trend is becoming more popular but it's nice to see!) Didn't eat at the in-house restaurant but it smelled absolutely delicious, especially if you enjoy Japanese food. There's an elevator you can use to get to your room, although on the second floor there is a step-up to get to some of the rooms if you are travelling with someone with mobility challenges. Michaela (manager and actively onsite!) worked with us to ensure we had an easy transition to our check-in and check-out. The only heads-up I would give visitors is that this is a boutique hotel in Portsmouth - parking is going to be a challenge during peak. We were able to park in a lot relatively nearby and pay only $1 plus change for our entire stay, but that's only because it was midweek and we parked within 40 minutes of the metered parking ending for the night and left before it began the next day. Staff will definitely help you find parking though - we just are locals so we had ideas of where to go ahead of time.

Very nice hotel conveniently located in the heart of Portsmouth. Loved the convenience of self check in, room was very clean, bed and pillows were great, and heated floors in the bathroom were a nice touch. The adjoining sushi restaurant made for a perfect later arrival dinner. Really enjoyed our stay!

The experience at hotel thaxter was amazing from start to finish. The entire team was prompt and eloquent when answering. They were beyond courteous as we had a photo shoot and surprise proposal. The staff was so welcoming and willing to help out. The hotel is right at the end of the main strip and is walkable to basically anything yo want to do in Portsmouth. The rooms were clean and the cleaning team was off the charts. The codes for the doors were a nice touch so you don’t have to carry the key card around. Will look to stay here the next time we’re in Portsmouth again!
