Castle in the Clouds - Moultonborough, New Hampshire

It’s not what it used to be. I've traveled there many times in the past. Although the main house is still very beautiful and intriguing to tour, the grounds are wonderful, especially their view toward Lake Winnipesaukee. In the summertime, it’s glorious—you can almost imagine what it would have been like back in its formative days.

The only thing I wasn't keen on was the crowds. I've never experienced so many people there as I did on my last trip. I was tripping over people in and outside of the house and grounds and I felt intrusive every where I wanted to take a photo. If I were to go again, I think I'd prefer to visit in the middle of the week to avoid the high volume of visitors.

There is transport to the top of the mountain where the house is located (which is a bit scary), or you can choose to walk the path up and down to the point of interest. We decided to walk back down through the woods, and it was actually fun. The trek back to your car in the vast parking lot is long, so make sure you’re equipped with water. However, there are modern facilities at the bottom carriage house, so a bathroom is readily available.

Castle in the Clouds or Lucknow, is a beautiful mountaintop estate in New Hampshire. The parking is huge, you have to walk to Carriage House, and buy tickets near gift shop. At Carriage House there are restrooms and a restaurant with stunning views on the lake.
Every 15 minutes you can take a 2 minute ride on a trolley up to the castle. They start with short video presentation of the Castle and about its owner - Thomas Plant. The businessman made his fortune on manufacturing the shoes, but unfortunately later lost all his money and this estate too.
The 2 floor mansion, is well maintained, and has unique design and objects of art. And the views are beautiful too.

Beautiful home, views and land. Before entering the house they have you watch a short video of the interesting history of the home. On the way to parking you drive by a stream that runs through wooded land and a path that takes you to a waterfall on the property.

We ate at the carriage house, where you meet the trolly to get to the house, and while service was extremely slow the chicken salad sandwich and lobster roll were very good. Great views of mountains from the patio.

There are many walking trails on the property and wish we had more time to explore. This landmark is a must see, especially when the fall colors are at their peak!

This is a very cool historical self-guided tour in the house and on the grounds. There is a guided tour of the basement which shows all the invention Thomas Plant had implemented into his Castle. Beautiful grounds. Occasionally, they have dinner & music nights in the summer months which are fun and quite delicious. I had one of the best lobster rolls ever there.

I moved to NH from Los Angeles July of 2021. I have hiked with friends and our dogs on numerous trails at Castle In The Clouds. Couldn't tour the castle with our dogs and hadn't gone. I was finally able to go this past Sunday. I had family visiting from Florida and we toured the castle while the dogs stayed home with my husband. What a amazing experience of exploring this wonderful home. I learned so much about the modern technology used during the time period of building this home. The attention to details were endless and I personally took hundreds of pictures. So many favorites from the tour and a couple of items stood out to me because of my experience of working in the kitchen and bath industry in modernizing homes today. I loved the refrigerator in the butlers pantry and learned how it was cooled for a early 1900s refrigerator. It even had ice trays! The coal stovetop/oven in the kitchen was a workhorse for the time and I can only imagine the food that was prepared there. There was even a central vacuum system for every room of the house! We were there for hours and even toured the basement. I once again found it interesting to learn about what was used to modernize this home of the early 1900s from the basement level. The greenhouse unfortunately is gone, but after seeing the pictures I wish I could go back in time and walk through it. It must have been amazing for the time period, heated and what a view from every window of what was the greenhouse. This house has views from every window as you walk through and it must have been paradise while living there! This is one of my favorite places I have visited in my travels!

My wife and I absolutely loved this historic home. The volunteers were excellent at explaining the history and it was easy to imagine why the original owner would've chosen this spot to build a home. This is a spot where we could've spent most of the day at walking the trails saying that waterfalls and just spending time in the house and on the grounds. we only had a few hours to spare what we saw was absolutely gorgeous.

Really nice easy hiking trails with beautiful waterfall views. The trolley ride was fun for kids. The house tour was cool and interesting to see the historical items in the rooms. The view from the estate is stunning overlooking Winnipesaukee!

We didn't visit the Castle because we arrived late. We did visit the waterfall on the way in and the grounds behind the home for a great view of the fall leaves. Great photo op spot for us too.
