It was a great activity with so much history to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone in the area. The gift shop is cute, you can grab a drink there and a snack before getting on a boat. Once you arrive at the dock, you can meet Moe, such a friendly mule, and the crew. The whole trip was great and educational.

The staff were amazing. So knowledgeable and very professional. Young and old (young at heart) loved Moe. What an incredible experience to travel back in time. We had a beautiful day with a breeze and some sun!

We had a wonderful time on our tour. Our hosts were very knowledgable on both the history of the boats on the canal as well as those who cared for the mules and the part they played in the voyages. Price for the tour was very reasonable as well, less than $40.00 for the two of us and it takes approx an hour to go the one mile and back. Remember this boat is being pulled by a mule so it’s a nice slow and relaxing ride. I highly recommend it especially late summer early fall when the daytime heat isnt as extreme as there is no air conditioning in existence in the 1800’s. 😀

Even though the boat ride itself was short, the boat captain gave a captivating narration that was PACKED with an incredible amount of history…honestly, he kept our attention the entire time. What a rich history we have in our own backyard!

The boat tour and trip to the visitor's center is a lot of fun. The center has a gift shop and food as well as nice facilities and a place to chill out for a bit. The canal boat is in a lovely park with historical markers. Learning about the history of our country while being on a boat pulled by a mule is a unique and fun experience.

A very neat, guided, historic boat tour aboard the Volunteer.
You could tell every volunteer present was there because they care, and they're excited to share the history of the I&M Canal.

It probably would've been *more* enjoyable had the other guest's children not nearly ruined the experience by completely disrespecting the docent during his spiel, running, jumping, screaming, talking.

But this was definitely a unique and informative little family experience that we're glad we did.

The guides for the trip did an outstanding job presenting information on Mule history & care, canal history, and Illinois early settlement. The leisurely 2 mile mule pulled boat ride was relaxing, and the guide presented during this time. This location had tremendous impact on the development of trade in Illinois and the USA. Buy tickets in advance. We were very impressed!

This has been on my bucket list for years. I love history and so does my grandson, who is eleven years old, so I finally drove down from Wisconsin and we took the tour. The operators were very nice, and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Being able to feed Mo the mule was fun, too. It was a relaxing, informative experience, and I recommend it for anyone who loves history, especially if you’re from Chicagoland.
