What an incredible experience. We visited in the early afternoon and saw tons of sea lions which was amazing in itself. We returned in the evening and saw two black bears cleaning up the scattered salmon! Definitely one of our top experiences.

Solomon Gulch Hatchery was fun to visit in early September because there were lots of sea lions eating salmon. There were maybe 20 of them. It was fun watching them catch the salmon.

Did it stink to kingdom come? Yes.
But were the photos and videos worth it? Definitely.

Great spot to view wildlife. Great spot to observe sea lions catching salmon in July. No bears sighted during our visit. Recommend checking tide information and visiting this location during high tide for best viewing experience.

Having been to smaller fish hatcheries that produce fish for pounds and lakes, I was surprised at what I found at the gulch hatchery. In order to give more salmon the chance to develop, the eggs are allowed to hatch here and given a shortcut to the ocean. This should mean a higher number make it to adulthood to maintain or improve the salmon numbers which suffer from overfishing.

Watching people sort fish by sex and the machinery control the flow of fish into the hatchery was fascinating.

The sea lions were enjoying their all-you-can-eat buffet but I was there at low tide and couldn't wait until high tide. Check your tide charts before you go.

Massive seal lions everywhere, many fishing and growling at kittiwakes trying to nab fish! Pouring rain, didn't bother with a waterproof jacket, but so exciting to watch, me, shoes and clothes will dry, just water. Hundreds of salmon fighting way upstream. Saw several jump out of water, others made it through underwater. Fascinating!!! No bears when I was there, late afternoon, but watch for them.

An absolute MUST STOP. The sea lions were active in September catching fish. We even saw a black bear onsite. An incredible experience.

This is an example of human ingenuity helping nature. Salmon are bred and released with a system for their return. When they come back, the circle of life continues. Also, lots of wildlife to enjoy

The falls feed the stream that flows past the hatchery. Very pretty. The zillion seagulls gather during salmon run. You cannot fish at the hatchery, but you can fish at the culverts that run under the highway a hundred yards or so east of the hatchery.
