We did a Southern Bus Tour for 9 days in June of 2024, visiting Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana with Tri State Bus Company. We had an exceptional driver Gary who goes over and beyond to please his clients. Gary is the best driver I have experienced in my 30 years of coordinating bus trips.

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with bus service. We hired them for our wedding guest transport to the wedding reception (from Dubuque to Davenport), and they called the day before to say we had to use a trolley instead of one of the busses because if a mistake on their end. The day of the wedding, they didn't follow the route and several guests had to drive themselves to the reception, a couple missed it altogether because they were unable to make the drive. Tri-State emailed back and forth about it but stopped responding when I suggested 10% reimbursement for not meeting the contract.

We used Tri-State Travel as a trolley shuttle for our wedding guests! We had such a wonderful experience with the wedding party using the trolley first for group photos and then the wedding guests! We had a set itinerary and plan, however the driver was willing to alter the plan due to unforeseen rain! Communication was great prior to the wedding and the driver was great throughout the evening! We highly recommend!

Tri-State was so helpful in coordinating our transportation needs for our wedding! They helped us organize a trolley to move our guests between the hotel, an event downtown, and the wedding venue. They provided safe transportation for everyone on our winding backroads, limited our parking burden, worked with me to figure out a schedule that worked for the day, were flexible when I needed to add a stop, and worked with me to make sure our at-home venue could accommodate the trolley. And as a bonus, the trolley was so cute and added some real Galena magic to the day. They were punctual, friendly, and so helpful!

We rode the trolley for the luminaria night 2018. When we got on the trolley, the driver didn’t greet us, nor did he say a word to all the passengers before beginning the route. There were some neat views of the lights, not that the driver pointed them out; he didn’t say a word to the passengers during the ride. There was no holiday music, either. We didn’t expect a full tour, but a little orientation and some good cheer would’ve gone a long way. After a few other passengers got off to walk back down to town, presumably out of the same dissatisfaction and boredom we experienced, we also opted to get off and walk down the stairs. We walked back by the place we’d bought the tickets—they are a vendor and not the owner—and we’re told we weren’t the only people who had complained. I also called the company to share our experience and they made no offer to make up for it and offered a weak apology. Save your dollars and do your own driving tour to see the lights from a distance, or just walk around. Overall, it was like riding a city bus, and maybe even more underwhelming and less friendly.

I rarely review anything but this had to be shared to warn others in advance. We were in Galena and our young son wanted to ride the trolley. We were staying at the DeSoto Hotel and one of the dispatch locations was nearby, so we inquired. We had a few minutes until the next tour was scheduled and the young girl working the desk told us we were too late. I asked her to ask the driver if an exception could be made. She begrudgingly did so with no reply from the driver but another employee told her to call his cell phone. The desk girl told us AGAIN we were too late. I actually had to ask her to please do what her co-worker advised and call his cell, which she did and he did not answer. The only reason we did end up on the tour was her coworker called her back on the walkie talkie as we were leaving and the girl said, "He's not answering. I don't know what to do." Apparently the coworker knew what to do as she reported back that she spoke with the drive and he would pick us up. Upon entry to the bus, the back bench by the handicap entrance, the only available seating for the three of us, was locked in an upright position. I could not unlock it. Another passenger helped as this was holding up the tour. We both asked the driver to help and his response was, "I don't know how that works." (He later bragged he'd been giving tours for this company for decades but yet he was clueless.) We paid a LOT of money for this tour and so I began working alone on the seat and finally was able to figure out how it opened, prompting a round of applause from the likely and rightfully annoyed other passengers. The tour itself was fine but the driver made multiple off-color jokes, many of which were met with moans from the passengers. For example, at one home, the driver, a man likely in his late 60s, described in great detail the physique and tight clothing of a young girl who often sunbathed on a deck he slowed down so all could see in case she was there. She wasn't and he seemed disappointed and let us all know he honked at her daily and knew she did not like the attention. So the desk girl was lazy, the driver was too as well as being inappropriate and what most reasonable adults would describe as a pervert. All this for $36. At least our son rode free. Next time, we'll walk the tour.
