I already know I will revisit this place after the holidays. Great staff, friendly and informative. The building houses the historical society, a wonderful gift shop, and an African American Cultural Center. The day I went, there was an amazing gingerbread display on the first floor and upstairs there was an exhibit of gorgeous furniture. I never knew this was here, just a few miles away from York, Maine, where I was celebrating Thanksgiving. I can't wait to go back to experience other exhibits and perhaps a walking tour around this historic hub.

We really enjoyed our 90 minute walking tour with Ron Sher, he is an excellent historian. The museum is small but informative. We liked all of the exhibits and the staff were super nice and helpful. We felt it was worth the admission price. The shop has a lot of good Portsmouth history. 17 minute movie was a good orientation.

I remember when this building 🏫 use to be the Portsmouth Public Library. I like the new 🆕 one better!
I enjoyed my visit because I enjoyed seeing aspects of Portsmouth history, some of which I remember seeing. Seeing a few photos and news 🗞️ articles about what Portsmouth used to look like, especially Market Square, I found interesting. The Seacoast African Cultural Center I found to be a little lacking. There wasn't much history about the Colonial period, what Portsmouth was like after the Revolution, especially about Ona Judge, or the Civil Rights Movement.
I am looking forward to going on the tours that they offer. There is a gift shop.
If you are not an old-time Portsmouth resident, it might not interest you. If you want to learn about Portsmouth, it's a good place to start.
Update: February 2024; the old red English telephone 📞 booth has returned! It has been repaired and repainted. I did miss it!
