Ashleigh and Doug have really made something special here at Ice Axe. I just got back from what most would describe as a trip of a lifetime to Antarctica. It’s now what I’m calling the first of many adventures that I plan to do with them as time goes on. The kindness, community, planning, and overall excitement about skiing and the outdoors that you feel all around you on these trips is incredible.

They have an all star team of guides that join them for these expeditions that are the best of the best! I had Elias as my guide and the dynamic between him and the rest of my rope team was really special. Sometimes when doing guided trips you’ll have trouble really trusting your guide’s choices on safety and terrain, but not here. Not with the Ice Axe crew. You are in good hands with every single one of these guides.

It’s important to set expectations for the terrain being skied in Antarctica. You won’t be skiing the steepest couloirs or skiing the most vert. You may attempt to ski one location only to wake up that morning and find out the sea ice is too thick and you’re pivoting to plan b or c or d. This truly is an expedition where things change and anything can happen. Having that mindset is important as you really are at the end of the world here same cut off from humanity.

I would do multiple trips a year with them if I could afford it! But for now… it’s time to save up until I can take the next one!

I would heavily encourage considering another trip expedition company. I signed up for a trip with my friend, and paid for a deposit, airline travel, as well as the trip insurance that Ice Axe Expeditions requires. After about a month, one of the employees reached out to us explaining that they never acquired permits, so they would be cancelling the trip. Little did we know - the trip insurance can't be refunded for cancellation through the expedition company. Our flights are through airlines that are not often used for domestic airline travel, so "flight credit" from cancelling will likely go to waste. We're out over a thousand dollars each, and Ice Axe Expeditions won't reimburse any of this for us. They are a highly unreliable company in my mind, I'm not sure why they would advertise a trip that they hadn't fully secured permits for. Would encourage everyone and anyone to look elsewhere for expeditions.
