We had wonderful trip to Italy. The hotels were beautiful and welcoming. The breakfasts were included and each hotel offered a wide array of choices to start our days off with full stomachs.
A highlight of our stay in Venice was the private walking tour. Our guide, Hilaria was knowledgeable and personable. We saw beautiful artwork by famous artists in the Frari Church. The tour ended with an aperitif and chichetti, a Venetian snack made of bread topped with cheese and meats, delicious!
On to Florence, where we had an easy, pre planned train ride from Venice. Another gorgeous hotel on the Santa Maria Novella Square. Often musicians performed just below our window. All the sights of Florence were walkable. The highlight for us was the group cooking class at Mama Florence. We made two types of pasta and saw a demonstration making dessert and sauce. Afterward we enjoyed dinner with wines, family style. We met many other people from all over the US. It was fun to share a meal and lively conversation.
Another great experience was a small group ( 6 total) day trip to Sienna and San Gimignano. The driver pick us up at the door of our hotel. Bennie, our guide, lived her whole life in Sienna and gave us an informative and fun tour. The lunch and wine tasting in a picturesque location were excellent. Once again, we enjoyed the company of the other travelers.
The last stop was in Cinque Terre. We stayed in Monterosso in a hotel that was built into a mountain. Our private balcony overlooked the sea. It was a relaxing place to wind down our vacation. One evening we went on a shared sunset boat tour where we saw the five towns that make up Cinque Terre from the water. Dinner was made on the boat and consisted of fresh seafood caught that day. Again, we shared the tour with a small family and enjoyed their company. The following day we traveled by train to another small town and had a delicious lunch in an outdoor restaurant overlooking the sea.
All in all, it was a memorable experience! One I would highly recommend!
