In a house built in 1860 and kept up to look like it did then were two very nice ladies in the Visitor’s Center. They were very helpful to me visiting from Missouri.

They have a very good self guided tour.

This is a comment about the area around Abingdon VA.
Never in my travels have we seem so much litter on the roads. Makes us sick to see the beautiful areas trashed. When I asked am employee at one of preserves where all the litter comes from he told "locals". If you want to keep visitors coming clean up the roadsides. We visited Grayson Highlands, the Virginia Creeper Trail and Channels and the drive to each of them was so disappointing.

Abingdon basically extorted $1000 for a minor traffic violation. Highly recommend NOT visiting.
