This was really fun to find but word of advice - don’t bring your dog. The cliffs are steep and too dangerous for our excited Doberman with all the squirrels about 😱
Was a proper workout, very grateful for whoever put all the helping ropes in place!
Also, wouldn’t recommend after rain. For the paths but also would make the river trickier too and tree roots too slippery to hold on to.

This site is located on the east bank of the Lugar Water some distance north of the ruins of Auchinleck Castle. Access is by a hard to spot disused trail which branches off of the main path before winding down the precipices. Of the many artificial caves or rock shelters scattered across Ayrshire, this is surely one of the most impressive and Sublime- both in its style and architecture as well as its stupendous setting. For ardent admirers of landscape legend and later aesthetics of designed landscapes, this treasure will make for memorable visit to cherish. Indeed, the highest expectations will likely be satisfied. The approach is along a narrow ledge above sheer cliffs, with a final scramble over a steeply descending burn by means of a rudely placed plank. Sufficed to say, this feature isn't on any modern maintained path and is truly situated within a gorge wilderness. Access can be dangerous, and the experience is somewhat marred by spraypaint graffiti inside the cave. The cave itself is perhaps trumped by several private examples on the Barskimming estate, but those caves are not configured in such a dramatically grand and steep position, which is really what gives the Auchinleck cave the wow factor.
