No visit to the ecological disaster that is the Salton Sea would be complete without a visit to the old yacht club in North Shore. The building is a work of art, registered as a national historical place, and a testament to the possibilities of the Salton Sea.
Nice to see it being used as a community center now rather than a vacant shell of its former self.

A once thriving social nexus, North Shore Beach and Yacht club is now a ghost of the past. Like many sites along this stretch of the Salton Sea though, these ghostly locations are hi-definition screen shots, burned into time — environmentally abandoned, but thriving artistically.

This is the perfect first stop for those road touring down the eastern coastline of the Salton Sea. A hypnotic sensory pleasure unique to this region of the world, and those who admire, and are inspired by, its distinct charms, strange attractions, and most beautifully eclectic locals and nomadic travelers.

The renovations to the outside of the building (architect Albert Frey) are beautiful! Recommending a stop and stretch of the legs, even if it’s still closed! (No services available at this time).

It’s a great contrast to the buildings you’ll see if you venture further south along the Salton sea!

The North Shore Beach and Yacht Club is a fascinating, historical marvel, designed nautically by renowned modernist architect Albert Frey. When built in 1959, it glistened as the shimmering jewel of a popular, exciting marina on the vibrant, yet accidental Salton Sea aka, the "California Riviera."

In the 1970's heavy tropical storms, floods and heightened salinity levels dampened tourism, wreaking havoc and obliterating previously enthusiastic recreation, leaving in its wake the vibrant economic and social panache of the 1950's and 1960's.

This tidal wave of unfortunate circumstances ultimately caused the club's subsequent demise. Subsequently, the facility was shuttered in 1984.

Having fallen victim to abandonment, decay and vandalism, the iconic building was revived, renovated and restored by Riverside County in 2010, resuscitated briefly as the Salton Sea museum, then listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

In 2024, the property has evolved to serve local residents as a social and community center, while continuing its journey as a fascinating, historical marvel.

We stopped by to check out the building and they were having a family fun night at the Rec center. It was a small group of families and our kids enjoyed the games and planned events. It was fun and everyone participated. It was a pleasant surprise.

Beautiful, but pretty stinky the closer you get. Don't get too close or you will sink in the stink! We saw a jeep stuck in the nasty. Worth the trip!

Interesting place. The scenery is beautiful from afar but when you are at the shore it is dead quiet and feels though as there is no life form nearby. The shore is covered with fish bones. Good place to visit briefly if you are in the area but I wouldn't drive here from afar.
