The Castle was absolutely stunning. Mr. Hearst had eccentric taste. He was bold with taste and design. The pools are stunning. Please be prepared, the restrooms at the welcome center are not working. This evidently has been going on for months, there are Porta potties... (totally gross 😝) the staff was friendly and tours well planned. The tempature from the welcome center, up to the castle, can vary by 20 degrees, very warm at the top. Lots of stairs and walking.

Absolutely astounding tour of the pools, main rooms, and gardens. Be prepared to walk 2 miles and 164 stairs. There are magnificent pieces of artwork throughout the property, so be aware of your surroundings or else miss some of the best kept ancient artifacts available for public viewing.

The tour is great. You can buy tickets in person or online. But be aware 6 online if it's the busy part of the year.
Tours are for sections of the estate/ house/ castle not the whole thing.
**As of 2024 they DO NOT allow you to walk around the estate after tours.**

Its still worth the visit but all reviews saying they allow you to wander around are not up to date.

Very nice stop for a snack, clean-up and souvenirs before a tour of the Castle. They also have a great theater and small museum for the history on Hearst Castle. Hadn't been to the Castle in over 20 years. Forgot how fun and interesting it is. We did the upstairs tour and had a great guide! Gardens were lovely in the late spring.
