A fantastic modern museum, large and packed with great displays and lots of information. There are interactive displays for the children and it’s a real visual feast. There is a video shown with info too. The gift shop has good books with more info about the site and the Mississippian people who built and inhabited it. Right outside is are the ancient main mounds and plaza. You should really go hear before seeing the mounds to get a better idea of what exactly you are looking at. The staff are incredibly helpful and nice. The bathrooms are clean and modern.

All the architectural work off how they found things buried & the culture was a great one to see.... just an ALL around awesome day

Amazing space. It is unfortunate that more people don't seem know of these. Rivals sites in Mexico, in grandeur and historic value. It is very nice and peaceful, one good side effect of it having few visitors

First of all, it's free to attend (donations suggested). Great deal for what you are getting. A beautiful museum depicting an ancient city of the Mississippians from a 1000 years ago. They also have few stations with movies getting more into the details of the area and the people who lived here. Very pleasant and quiet. There are hiking trails to visit all the mounds in the vicinity. You can also climb the many steps of the Monks Mount and see the outline of down town St. Louis, and the Arch in the distance. I've been here a few times, and always come back when I'm in the area.

Cahokia Mounds has an interpretive center with information on the Mississippian Culture from a little over a thousand years ago. In the Americas, the Incas and Aztecs are often known but not the Mississippians. The Mississippians traded from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Atlantic to the Ozarks. The museum includes artifacts and the recreation of a typical village of the time. The Mississippians were mounds builders and the grounds cover several acres with mounds, being able to climb the largest of these, Monks' Mound.

What a place! The monks mound is super cool. And the visitors center is basically a museum for the site. It was a hot day so we didn't explore much of the site but it's an amazing place.
