Angels Flight Railway: A Journey Through History in Los Angeles

\n\n

Angels Flight Railway stands as a captivating historical landmark nestled within the vibrant heart of Los Angeles. Operating a miniature railway that ascends the formidable Bunker Hill terrain, this attraction offers more than just a ride; it provides a tangible connection to the city's storied past. For visitors seeking unique experiences and cultural immersion, Angels Flight Railway represents a journey back in time, showcasing early 20th-century engineering and the spirit of innovation that once defined this region.

\n\n

The Historical Significance and Engineering Marvel

\n\n

Established in 1901, Angels Flight Railway was conceived as a solution to the steep inclines of Bunker Hill, a neighborhood rapidly developing during the city's expansion. The railway was initially constructed to transport materials and people, reflecting the industrial growth of the era. Its operation relies on a sophisticated system of counterbalance and cable haulage, a technology reminiscent of early mountain railways worldwide. This engineering ingenuity, combined with its role in the social fabric of Los Angeles history, solidifies its status as a significant piece of transportation heritage.

\n\n

The railway's name itself is evocative, suggesting a gentle ascent to a higher plane. This sentiment is central to its enduring appeal. The ride, though short by modern standards, feels like a transition, moving passengers from the bustling streets of Los Angeles' historic core towards a quieter, more elevated perspective. The railway's operation has been preserved and continues, offering rides that mimic the experience of those who rode the original line a century ago, albeit with modern safety considerations.

👍 Reviews of Angels Flight Railway

It’s a beautiful landmark, but…

This landmark, on Los Angeles’ hill street, is a beautiful landmark. As a relic of times past, this is the last part standing of the old Bunker Hill neighborhood, razed for the creation of commercial centers.

As a tourist destination, it is a beautiful and upkept (at least in the main area) place.

Speaking of being upkept, it seems like the main tram is being cleaned. On the stairs that you can choose to climb to make it to the top station, the stairs were highly dirty. Even worse, it appeared like there was a liquid dropped from a top step. It would be amazing if they cleaned it.

In terms of the tram, it’s mostly an amazing trip from both top to bottom. The attendant was very nice and friendly!

However, the only reason why this review isn’t a 5 star one is simple due to the fact that the tram literally rattles as it changes direction on the track. I don’t know if it is age, wear, or lack of maintenance, however, the tram rattles.

All in all, I would give, if I could, 4.5 stars for this location.

A must see and do for everyone that visits the downtown LA area. Directly across from the Grand Central Market. Highly recommend for Saturday morning or Sunday morning with the family especially young kids. Going up the angels play takes you directly to the museum of contemporary art. A nice little Park auditorium and the broad museum.

This historical site is a must-see for everyone visiting the area from out of town or even from out of state or out of the country. The energy right around the railway is fantastic with lots of dining and museums very close by.

Going down Angels light will take you directly to Grand Central Market where there's hundreds of delicious international foods available for everyone.

Super busy during the week much more manageable during the weekends.

This is the cutest and best way to get up the hill in downtown San Diego.

It’s $1 for one way, you pay at the top. They take tap to pay!

The operator was super nice and answered any questions we had.

It’s a cute place to take photos but mostly the best way to get up the hill.

Check it out!

This was such a cool thing to do. You pay once you get to the top. You can either just take a ride up and walk back down or pay for a round trip. Once you get to the top, you can walk around for a little bit and see what’s around, hang out and enjoy the scenery. It was $6 in total for my husband, son & I for round trip.

The fare is $1.00 one way or you can purchase a souvenir round-trip ticket for $2.00.

A super fun, easy and inexpensive train ride. A must do if you are in the area. We road it up the hill, walked around the plaza then rode it back down. You pay at the top, so no need to buy tickets at the bottom. Once you get off at the top you can pay $1 per person for the ride up and buy return tickets if you are going to take it back down.

This train is an older historic one that sits across from a food hall. It goes up a small hill where you can get off and see a great view and have some chill time eating or just hanging out. It’s $1 going then another if you want to go back down. They have two trains running st the same time

Go experience it if your DTLA.
Only $1 up and $1 down per person.

Wasn’t sure what we were going up to, but once we were up there it was so beautiful. The ticket stub you get is also a great little souvenir.

A very short ride. 1$ single way and we bought round trip tickets. Coming from the top to the bottom. Then visit the grand central market to some food and drinks. You can park the car along the road at the top of the railway. It’s 2 hours free parking.
